Автоматическое устройство, используемое для регистрации и подсчета голосов, а также учета количества избирателей, явившихся на избирательный участок. Расположено внутри кабины для голосования [voting booth]. На табло внутри кабины указаны фамилии кандидатов, наименования партий или поставленные на голосование тексты. Против каждой надписи есть рычажок, с помощью которого и осуществляется голосование. До начала голосования механизм находится в нейтральном положении. Система включается и выключается самим голосующим с помощью особого рычага, одновременно задвигающего шторку кабины, что обеспечивает тайну голосования. Результат голосования, а также число проголосовавших регистрируются механическим счетчиком или электронной системой. После окончания голосования члены счетной комиссии снимают показания о результатах голосования на данной машине и запирают механизм на срок до 30 дней. Впервые этот механизм официально был использован в 1892 в г. Локпорте, шт. Нью-Йорк; сейчас используется в большинстве штатов
